One of the most-awaited Indian festivals that attract the crowd from all over the world is the International Kite Festival of Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The festival kicks off with much enthusiasm and of course with big, beautiful and unique kites. This festival is organized by the State Government and Tourism Department of Gujarat. Kites of all shapes and sizes are flown, and the main competition is to battle nearby kite-flyers to cut their strings and bring down their kites. The city of Ahmedabad has been hosting Kite Festival since 1989 as a part of the official celebration of Uttarayan which is celebrated every year on 14th January, known as Makar Sankranti in other parts of north India, and Pongal in Tamil Nadu, and continues on the 15th. The festival brings the master kite makers and flyers not just local but from all over the world to demonstrate their unique creations and amaze the crowds with their highly unusual kites and kite flying skills. In recent years renowned Kite Masters and Flyers from Malaysia brought their Wau-Balang kites, Ilayang-Ilayang have come from Indonesia, Kite Innovators from the USA have arrived with giant banner kites and Japanese Rokkaku fighting kites have shared the skies with Italian Sculptural Kites, Chinese Flying Dragons and the latest high-tech modern wonders have astounded the crowd. The production of kites and kite supplies can be seen on the streets of Ahmedabad beginning as early in November in the Patang Bazaar, a special kite market that appears in the old city and remains open 24 hours a day for all kite lovers to stock up for the festivities.
