The Glistening Jaisalmer Fort

Jaislamer Fort is the true pride of the the Rajput legacy which once governed Jaisalmer. It is also locally known as Golden Fort or Sonar Quila. This is because of the reason for the use of yellow sandstone for the construction of its massive walls.

History:

The Jaisalmer fort was built in 1156 AD. Bhati Rajput ruler, Rawal Jaiswal who founded the city also got this fort made during his reign. It caught the eyes of many rulers like Sultan Alauddin Khalji of Delhi, Afghan chief Amir Ali, Humayun from 1300 CE to 1762.Marathas ruled this fort until 1818 when a treaty was signed between East India Company and Mulraj (Maratha) which allowed him to retain control of the fort and provided for protection from invasion

Architecture:

The city surrounds the fort and the fort stands with pride on the Trikuta hill of Jaisalmer.  The fort is 1500 feet long and 750 feet wide & height of 250 feet above the surrounding countryside. To enter the fort, there are four gateways- the Akhai Pol, Ganesh Pol, Suraj Pol, and Hawa Pol. Inside the fort there are Jain Temples,The Laxminath temple & fascinating havelis ornated sandstone carving built by merchants of Rajasthan..

Traveller Tips:

·         Wear Comfortable clothes, sports shoes & carry a bottle of mineral water to stay hydrated.

·         There are lot of shops inside fort so take time to look around stuff and do not purchase in haste

·         Carry sunglasses & hat to protect from scorching heat.

How to Reach There:

Jodhpur Airport is the closest and the fort is 225 kms which will take around 4 hours to reach via cab. However Railway Station at Jaisalmer has a well established network and connects trains running from Delhi, Jaipur, Jodhpur and other cities
