Located at a distance of 82 km northwest of Udaipur in Rajasmand district of Rajasthan, Kumbhalgarh fort is the second largest fort in India after Chittor Fort. It is declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the group Hill Forts of Rajasthan at the 37th session of the World Heritage Committee organised in Cambodia in 2013. The Fort is the birth place of Maharana Pratap and it also features the largest Shivalinga in the world.

History:
Kumbhalgarh was built by Rana Kumbha who was the Rana of Mewar from Sisodia Rajput clan. Kumbhalgarh also separated Mewar and Marwar from each other and was used as a place of refuge for the rulers of Mewar at times of danger. The fort is constantly attacked by various rulers Ahmed Shah I in 1457, Mahmud Khalji, in 1458–59 & 1467, Akbar in 1576 and was recaptured by Maharana Pratap in 1585. After few years, Mewar surrendered against the forces sent by Emperor Jahangir in 1615. The fort was taken over by British rulers in 1818 and later returned to Udaipur State after independence..
Architecture:
Encircled by thirteen elevated mountain peaks, the fort is constructed on the top most ridges around 1,914 meters above sea level. The fortifications of the fort extend to the length of 36 kms making it one of the longest walls in the world. The fort has an array of Hindu & Jain temples. The sand dunes of the Thar Desert can be seen from the fort walls.
