Encircled by enormous deodar, Chail Cricket Ground is the highest cricket ground in the world. Built in the year 1893 by Maharaja of Patiala Bhupinder Singh, who developed Chail as his summer capital, the ground was used to play friendly matches by him. It was later transferred to the military school.

The ground is also used as a polo ground, located at the height of around 2,144m. It rests 7500 feet above sea level and is known as one of the famous cricket stadiums in India. Set in the state of Himachal Pradesh in India, this cricket ground is in the scenic hill station of Chail. Visitors can relish a splendid view of Sutlej Valley, Shimla and Kasauli at night from here. This ground is also used as the school playground by Chail Military School. There is a well-maintained basketball court and the same cricket ground also has goal posts that are used for playing football.

History

The cricket-loving Maharaja of Patiala- Bhupinder Singh made this ground. He decided to make his summer capital at this village but Lord Kitchener blocked his entry to Shimla in 1891. But, later he discovered a hilltop and built a cricket ground on it, which is covered by huge deodar and pine trees. During that period, the Maharaja used to play cricket with the British here but now it is under the control of Indian Army. On the other side of the ground, you'll find the colossal Himalayan ranges splendidly glittering in the sun and snow-clad everything thereunder.

No big matches have been played at this scenic ground. However, some of the Test players do visit Chail for practice sessions. So, why has there been not even any first-class matches conducted here yet? The ground requires renovation in order to be in a condition to host a match of such standard. Also, in order to play matches, prior permission from the Military School is required.

Another reason as to why matches are not held here could be the problem of balls being lost on the occasion of a big six being hit. Although there is a fence to stop the balls from rolling down the hill, there is no way to stop those that fly way above the fence.
