Description
Built in the main campus of the University of Calcutta on College Street, Ashutosh Museum of Indian Art is named after Sir Ashutosh Mukherjee - the Vice Chancellor of the University of Calcutta. This museum was established in 1937 in order to collect and preserve specimens of different phases of Bengal as well as Indian art. Showcasing antique Indian sculpture, Bengali terracotta and brass work, this museum is famous for being the first public museum in any university in the country. The most distinct of all the items on display are the Basalt sculptures that reflect a unique blend of Hindu and Buddhist styles.
