Description
One of the most iconic structures in Hyderabad, the Begumpet Mosque boasts of an impressive facade and awe-inspiring interiors. More than 100 years old, this mosque is known by different names - Mosque of the Moors, Masjid Iqbal Ud Daula, Aiwan-E-Begumpet and Spanish Mosque. The use of spires instead of usual domes and minarets gives this mosque a unique church-like appearance. Unlike other mosques, it features a pointed main roof with two curtailed pyramids placed one above the other and separated by octagonal domes. Capable of accommodating up to 3000 people, this mosque features two rooms, a central corridor and a large prayer hall. Moorish arches and calligraphic Quranic verses inscribed on the walls adorn the interiors of the mosque. Declared as a heritage site by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), this mosque is a place worth visiting.
