Description
Bhawanipore Cemetery is a civilian cemetery with an interesting history backing up its popularity. In use since the year 1864, this cemetery contains 95 Commonwealth burials of the First World War, early burials of service personnel of Fort William as well as 617 burials from Second World War. In addition to these, this cemetery features 187 non-war burials within the walled boundaries. Initially, both war graves and civilian graves were in denominational plots and indiscriminately mingled. In the year 1954, after the church authorities' decision, the outlying war graves were moved into the area with the highest number of war burials. At present, Bhawanipore Cemetery has a separate service section that features the graves of both world wars.
