Description
Exuding palpable spiritual energy, the Dakshineshwar Kali Temple of Kolkata was built by Rani Rashmoni - an ardent devotee of Goddess Kali. Spanning across three floors, this temple reflects traditional Navaratna style of Bengal architecture. It rests on a raised platform that is approximately 100 feet above the ground. From the flight of stairs to the nine exquisite spires that are distributed in the upper two storeys, every architectural feature of this temple is simply awe-inspiring. The idol of Goddess Kali, in the form of Bhavataraini, is placed upon a silver thousand-petal lotus in the garbha griha. In proximity to the main temple, there is a row of a dozen of identical Lord Shiva temples - each of which is built in Aat Chala Bengal architecture. A Vishnu Temple that houses idols of Lord Krishna and Radha is built towards the north-west of the complex. Within the compound, there is also a bathing ghat, a shrine dedicated to Rani Rashmoni and Nahavat-Khana, where Ramakrishna (temple priest) spent a considerable part of his life.
