Linking the cities of Kolkata and Howrah - the Howrah Bridge, built over the Hooghly River, is the symbol of Kolkata city. Commissioned in the year 1943, Howrah Bridge is the world's sixth longest bridge of its type. This bridge is known to be the world's busiest cantilever bridge with a daily traffic of around 100,000 vehicles and more than 150,000 pedestrians. The bridge is a complete riveted structure, with no use of nuts and bolts. Howrah Bridge was the third longest Suspension Type Balanced Bridge on Earth at the time of its commission in the year 1943. Measuring 2,313 feet in length, this bridge has a central span of 1,500 feet and a suspended span of 564 feet. It is divided into 8 lanes with two footpaths on either side.
