Description
A huge hit with the visitors, NC Mehta Gallery displays a collection of manuscripts and miniature paintings. The best known so far and a treasured collection is the Chaurapanchasika (Fifty Love Lyrics of a Thief) written by the 11th century Kashmiri poet, Vilhana, who was sentenced to be hanged because he fell in love with the king s daughter. Just before his execution, Vilhana wrote these poems and upon reading them the king was so impressed that he got his daughter married to him. The gallery is named after Late Shri Nanalal C. Mehta, one of the pioneers of Indian miniature paintings. The miniature paintings were made with mineral colours on handmade paper.
