Description
Established during India's colonial era, South Park Street Cemetery is famed as one of the oldest non-church cemeteries on Earth. At present, this site is one of Kolkata's important heritage sites and is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Simply awe-inspiring are the memorials that flaunt an impressive amalgamation of Gothic and Indo-Saracenic architecture styles. The tombs over the graves are graced with classical details and sculptures. On the epitaphs, interesting professions of the departed are inscribed. Most of which reads 'breeder of cattle', 'silversmith', 'schoolteacher', 'head tide-waiter', 'architect', 'postmaster' and 'surgeon'. The tombs that are built in Indo-Saracenic style are of composite brick structure. They feature a central dome that is flanked by small replicas of Orissan rekha deul on four sides.
