Description

St Paul's Cathedral is a celebrated Christian shrine in the culturally rich city of Kolkata. This cathedral covers a large area that is about 247 feet long and 81 feet wide. It was destroyed twice due to earthquakes, which took place in 1897 and 1934. After an extensive renovation work, the present imposing structure was built that was inspired by the Canterbury Cathedral of United Kingdom. Its tower was designed to resemble the Bell Harry Tower of the English cathedral. The main hall of this shrine consists of carved pews and chairs made of wood. Multicoloured artworks adorn its eastern walls while stained glasses add to its architectural beauty. Pictures depicting the life journey of Saint Paul are also present inside this cathedral. The western window designed by Sir Edward Burne-Jones is another of its architectural highlights.
