Description
Swami Vivekananda's ancestral house is a major landmark of Kolkata. The great sage and reformer was born in this house in 1863 and spent a major part of his life here. Originally built in the 18th century, the structure was crumbling and needed urgent restorative attention. In 1962, the Ramakrishna Mission acquired the property, renovated it and transformed it into a museum-cum-cultural centre. Spread over an area of 22000 square feet, the centre has a museum, a memorial shrine, a research centre, a library, an English Training Centre, a computer training centre and a charitable dispensary.
