Description
The Toli Masjid is one of the significant mosques in Hyderabad. The architect who designed this mosque was paid in 'Damri'- a currency used during the Mughal era. Owing to this fact, this mosque is often called as the Damri Masjid. Constructed in 1671 by Mir Musa Khan Mahaldar, during the reign of Abdullah Qutb Shah, this mosque boasts of Indo-Islamic architecture. Built on a raised platform, this masjid features two spacious halls. In the outer hall, there are five arched openings, each of which is graced with lotus medallions in the spandrels. Beautifully carved parapets and two towering minarets adorn the mosque's facade. The upper half of the edifice, characterised by arched jali screens, six finials and intricately decorated shafts of minarets, is bound to amaze visitors at the first glance. The Toli Masjid has won the Heritage Award by Indian National Trust for Art and Culture Heritage (INTACH). Listed as a heritage site by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), the masjid is definitely an attraction not be missed during a visit to the City of Nizams.
