Significance
- The Wankhede Stadium was built after disputes between the Cricket Club of India which owns the Brabourne Stadium, and the Mumbai Cricket Association over the allocation of tickets for cricket matches. India faced the West Indies in the first match at the Wankhede Stadium in January 1975.Sunil Gavaskar set the stadium record for the highest score by an Indian batsman, by scoring 205 runs during the 1978/1979 series against the West Indies. Alvin Kallicharran scored 187 for the West Indies in the same match. In 1980 Ian Botham took 13 wickets, and scored a century during the course of the Jubilee Test against India at the Wankhede Stadium.During the 1984/1985 season, Ravi Shastri hit six sixes off an over while playing in a domestic game, and scored the fastest double hundred in the history of first class cricket.
